This is a war-time photograph of Blackburn's Ford taken in 1862. In July of 1861, James Longstreet and his brigade defended this ford from the initial probes of the Union army under McDowell. The stiff defense Longstreet made here was partly responsible for the Federal decison to attempt a flanking maneuver that resulted in the battle of 1st Manassas.
The rubble in the background is what remains of a destroyed railroad bridge. |
