Pierre Goustov Toutant Beauregard was James Longstreet first commander in Confederate service. General Beauregard commanded the Confederate Army of the Potomac (also known as the 1st Corps) at the battle of 1st Manassas where Longstreet served as a Brigadier-General in command of the 4th Brigade.
Beauregard showed faith in Longstreet's abilities by assigning his brigade to defend Blackburns Ford on the far right of the Confederate lines. It was believed that this would be the target of the main Federal thrust. Indeed, this had been McDowell's intention before his advance troops encountered Longstreet's fierce resistence on the 18th of July and determined to attempt a flanking maneuver. |
