This photograph of Longstreet was most likely taken in the late 1880's or early 1890's. The items he wears are ceremonial, probably ribbons and pins commemorating Civil War veterans reunions that he had attended.

Despite the controversy surrounding his service with the Confederate armies, Longstreet remained a popular figure with the common soldiers, both North and South. While often excluded from gatherings of Confederate veterans, due to the influence of John Gordon and most likely Jubal Early as well, Longstreet often attended and spoke at gatherings of Union soldiers as well as at combined battlefield reunions.
