John Fairfax joined Longstreet's staff after the battle of 1st Manassas after having served briefly in an honorary position with Colonel N.G. Evans. Like most of Longstreet's excellent staff officers, Fairfax gave valuable service to his commander during the war and, during the battle of Sharpsburg, assisted personally in manning artillery pieces on two different occasions.
It was from Fairfax that Longstreet received the gift of the General's favorite horse Hero. General Longstreet was riding Hero when the General fell from a wound to the throat at the battle of the Wilderness. This was one of the only times Hero was known to have balked while under fire. Fairfax maintained his position on the 1st Corps staff throughout the war except for a brief excursion with General Richard Anderson when that commander was sent along with General Early into the Shenandoah Valley in 1864. However, he was with Longstreet when the surrender took place at Appomattox. |
