Thomas J. Goree was with Longstreet longer than any of his other staff officers. Having met the bright, young Texan on a train en route to Virginia, Longstreet requested Goree to be added to his staff once the former received his command near Manassas Junction. Goree then served with Longstreet, displaying remarkable ability, throughout the war.

After the surrender at Appomattox, Goree accompanied Longstreet on the long journey to Georgia where the two parted company. Goree and Longstreet, however, kept up a continued correspondence throughout the post-war years.

Goree's collection of letters, published under the title Longstreet's Aide, offer valuable, personal insights into the career of James Longstreet.
