Edward Porter Alexander served the Confederate armies from the battle of First Manassas, where he function as a signal officer on Beauregard's staff and was responsible for discovering the Federal attempts to flank the Confederates, until the end of the war.

Under Longstreet, Alexander served as an artillery officer, commanding the reserve artillery of the 1st Corps. Due to Longstreet's unbridled faith in his ability, Alexander often functioned as the de facto head of all the 1st Corps Artillery.

After the war, Alexander wrote one of the better memoirs published by former soldiers, Military Memoirs of a Confederate. The book is a critical narrative and offers many valuable insights into the operations of the Confederate military.
