In 1880, James Longstreet was appointed as US Minister to Turkey. During his tenure he managed to negotiate terms by which a team of archaeologists from the United States could work in the country.

This photograph was taken around the time Longstreet was serving as Minister.

Photo courtesy Library of Congress. Thanks to Judy Masrud for bringing it to my attention.
