The above photograph was taken by W.H. Tipton on April 29, 1893 in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Longstreet was attending the reunion held commemorating the 30th anniversary of the battle. Other notables there at the time were E.P. Alexander, William Mahone, and Dan Sickles.
The reunion was not held on the actual anniversary of the battle due to the extreme heat and humidity common to Pennsylvania at that time of year. Veterans of the war were reaching advanced ages, and since most camped out in the open, it was not deemed advisable to subject their failing constitutions to such extremes in environment. |
