      The Longstreet Painting

The above painting hangs in the library of the Chickamauga Visitor's Center. It is not on public display. Jim Ogden, park historian, was kind enough to allow some friends of mine and I to view the painting.

This painting was commissioned by Helen Dortch Longstreet in the 1930's. It was given to the Gettysburg National Park for display, but they did not have a proper place for it at the time and gave it to Chickamauga. Those of you who have visited Gettysburg may have noticed a painting that looks exactly like this one. The painting at Gettysburg is a copy; Chickamauga has the original.

To give you some idea of how large this painting is, consider the following. I am 5'9" and am standing on a chair about 2 feet tall. The painting goes to the ceiling, and it was difficult to get both me and the painting in one shot. According to Mr. Ogden, this is the reason the painting is not on public display. The library is the only room with a ceiling tall enough to hang it.
