During the winter of 1861-62, a scarlet fever epidemic swept through Richmond, Virginia where Longstreet's wife and children were staying while James was away at the front. Three of his children died in that epidemic, and those closest to Longstreet knew it to be one of the most heart-wrenching moments in his life. It would change him forever.

Above is the gravesite of those three children. The headstones were cleaned in June of 1997 by Dan Paterson and Dwight Wood.
