This is a photograph of James Longstreet and his second wife Helen Dortch Longstreet taken in 1901. To my knowledge this is the only known image of the couple together. Longstreet's first wife Louisa had died on December, 29 1889 at the age of 62 after having been James' wife for 40 years.
Helen and James met while the former was a student at Brenau College in Gainesville, GA, she being an acquaintance of Longstreet's daughter. They married in the governor's mansion in Atlanta on September 8, 1897, while she was employed as the assistant state librarian. She was 34, he 76. |
