This image of Longstreet was most likely taken in Richmond, during the late summer or early fall of 1863, after the battle of Gettysburg and before Longstreet departed the Army of Northern Virginia to serve briefly with the Army of Tennessee.
The photograph most commonly associated with the General, this picture is also a striking testament to the trials Longstreet had endured. It is easy to see the missing button on his uniform, probably lost in the previous months as he and his 1st Corps suffered through difficult service during the invasion of Pennsylvania. |
